At the time I’m typing this, it’s been 165 days since I sold my bike – not that I’m counting. Winter has come, the skies have turned grey, the rain has done its thing and two-wheels are tucked away for the season for those of us who are less brave/don’t really enjoy hypothermia. Or so I thought.

So, when they asked if I was up for some riding action around Barcelona in their new LiveWire rocket ship, there was only one possible answer. Disclaimer: it wasn’t “no”.

My previous H-D experience had been with the Street Bob, which won my heart with the brand’s long-standing winning formula: cool looks, analogue simplicity and a rumbling 1.8L twin engine. I envisioned the LiveWire as its nerdy sibling, the one wearing thick glasses that you smack on the head for randomly quoting science facts no one asked for, and I was extremely curious to see if H-D hadn’t spread itself too thin trying to cover all ends of the spectrum.
The thing is, H-D didn’t just pick a random motor and duct-tape it to one of their existing chassis hoping for the best. The first concept of the LiveWire was actually revealed in 2014 and the engineers have been busy since, tweaking and refining it to bring us the finished product we see here. If anything it was refreshing that it didn’t look like anything else in their line-up, wiping away any pre-conceptions I could bring with me. The LiveWire’s dimensions and stance mean it is more sports naked and less cruiser – and it rides like one: despite being just shy of 250kg, it carries its weight quite well. The centre of gravity is low due to its clever electric motor packaging and it flicks around corners with no drama or extra effort, feeling nimble enough no matter what you sling it at. The extra mass is only felt very occasionally under hard braking and instantly managed by the bike’s driver aid systems, but hey, we’ve all got holiday weight to deal with.
Where the LiveWire really shines is during acceleration. The main perk of being electrified is that torque is available from the get-go: twist the throttle and you will be treated to full on Warp 5 speeds before an internal combustion engine has drawn breath. It’s not about power here, it’s about delivery, those seemingly innocent 105hp taking you from 0-60 in about 3 seconds, almost verging on superbike territory. Very definitely the torque talking. There’s also no clutch or gears to faff around with, but if you are anything like me and enjoy working with engine braking, then you will soon be rotating that wrist to use the regenerative braking from the motor, barely needing to touch the brakes. And if you’re not quite happy with the set-up as standard, then you can just use the big bright touchscreen to customise the power delivery and regen to match your mood. Additionally, H-D made it all easier by including 4 different standard modes: Rain, Range, Road and Sport. Bases, it seems, are covered.
Now, don’t think I have forgotten the ‘C’ word – Charging. The LiveWire comes with a so-called 15.5kWh Renewable Energy Storage System, or RESS for friends. It is slightly more special than a battery because it includes the brains to manage all that is happening within the cells, insuring that they live a long happy life. Smart engineering stuff. Charging to full is done in about an hour using a DC fast charger or overnight through your standard domestic socket or level 2 plug, like you would with an electric car. And yes, you can charge it from the same stations as electric cars.
The RESS will give you circa 140 miles range whizzing around town or around half of that on highway. Although, I found that despite being quite throttle-happy there was still plenty of juice to go by the end of my ride, even in Sport Mode. In more practical terms, if you are a town commuter, you’ll probably be able to go a few days without needing to plug it in and, if you ever decide to go the distance, that could be easily done with a few strategic pitstops: top it up, stretch your knees, grab a warm cup of tea and go. This is obviously if you can manage to convince yourself to stay away from it for that long…
Riding the LiveWire is certainly an experience. Being a confessed petrolhead, I want to hold to my beloved ice-cap-melting-fuel-guzzling toys until Greta herself comes snatch them from my cold, dead hands. Sure I think all this recent EV technology is fantastic and much needed, but there is something very emotional about an engine: the growls, the rumbles, and the smells being the all-defining features of a bike’s character, its heart. But, the truth is, – and I will punish myself with a good whipping for saying this – I didn’t actually miss any of that.
Now, I’m not saying I don’t want pops and bangs and crackles in my life, however there was something very involving about riding a bike that is mostly silent. While H-D has made an effort to make it produce a very space-like hum on acceleration, the feeling of speed comes mostly through your other senses: how much bumpier the road feels, how fast you move relatively to what you see around you, how quickly sound fades – then, because everything is quiet, you can hear your fellow riders laughing under their helmets and be certain that they are having just as much of a good time as you are. Riding it brings all that is familiar about being on a bike, but different. The moment I stepped down from that bike I just wanted to get back on it and explore this bizarre new world.
Truth? It’s actually hard to find bad things to pick on, when something is so removed from your point of reference. As with any electric vehicle, charging network availability still varies quite a lot regionally, so this bike might be more suited to those close to bigger urban centres or those with easy access to fast chargers. There is also something to be said about bikes silently moving at the speed of light around cars and big buses. Unfortunately, bikers know all too well about close calls with distracted drivers and how loud pipes can genuinely save lives. Being a ninja has its advantages, but might require some extra care if you are filtering through traffic.
The H-D LiveWire certainly left a good impression. It is a really well put together, sturdy bike with some fairly handsome looks and gizmos to match. It certainly won’t be a bike for everyone, not only because its powertrain might not suit every rider but also because with great technology comes a great price tag – a £29k wallet-buster to be more specific. Even as a halo bike it might put off some of the younger customer base who have the interest but not the budget. However, the good guys at H-D tell me that there are plans to expand the EV offer to other bikes segments and I will be eagerly waiting to see what comes next. I guess there was a spark…
